This is my first article on my blog.
It had to be on abstract art because I am truly infatuated with it.- and before this fancy passes to evolve into something else, I need to pen down something on abstract style of art.
What is abstract art? Here are some answers I got
“Something which can be put upside down, who cares?’
“Messing with many colours and then trying to find out the subject ?”
And to top it all ….are Al Capp’s words
“Abstract art? A product of the untalented, sold by
the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered”..
…sounds fantastic,right?
Well…I think abstract art has an image of being somewhat rebellious…it is an art which keeps distance from the realistic depiction of images.
Most of my paintings that you see are Semi-abstractions…these type of paintings are in which the subject of the painting remains recognizable, but the environment around is highly stylized,.in a manner derived from the abstract…
For example.,amongst my paintings.”spa”, ’the moment”, ”dream or reality”etc….
Then I have created complete abstractions..like ‘birth” ,“war and peace”., ”recesses of mind”..etc.
In these, only colour and form narrate a story, yet never fail to evoke an emotional response in the beholder.
I personally find abstract art very energetic–don’t know how to explain that. Maybe, it gives me so much liberty to distort reality, the way I see it..in terms of colour ,form ,texture…we all do that once in a while..isnt it? I mean distorting reality. ..just that some pen it down, some paint it on a canvas , some use theatre or movies as a tool for reality distortion…………..but maximum lock it up in the depths of there psyche….what say you?…
As a hobby I have mostly practiced realism- show everything as it is.
I previously imitated the styles and themes of great artists, the old masters.
How ever I realized that one can never reach there because every artist paints on a different level……under.different circumstances…..impossible to get to that exact point where his focus laid at that time…
However..research on other artists allowed me a good practicing ground ..from which I could discover my own strengths. And I am still learning….I know I have a long way to go
In any case ,It did me good to familiarize myself with art of others.
Somebody said about abstract art as such ”My 4 year old could have done that”.
Actually, he could have, but you could not have……because, for abstract art, one must try to think like a child…free of mental obstacles and preconceived notions.
Moreover , I think even for drawing an abstraction-one does need practice in Realism art
One does not evolve from abstract to realism – it’s the other way round!
I read a lot about abstract art since last two years.
Abstract art has been around since a long time.
Actually –in the olden days..art had social significance. Abstract artists started a Modernist Movement against realism. Pablo Picasso was the innovator who made abstract art legitimate.
When I make abstract art, my brush seems to be in automation mode.—not much planning there—like a chain reaction—only clue is the subject matter.
As in the painting illustrated, I started with a clueless background..just having the colour combo in mind.

The wilderness arrived with few strokes of chrome green [my favourite green]
And then, after that coating dried in a few days ,came the roses, the main subject of the painting

And finally the final touches to the roses and my favourite twigs

Through this work I intended to show the situation of ”Against all odds” ..which can be equated to the will power of a man..
Each process seems to be revelation..
I feel every artist enjoys more while painting is in motion than in completing the picture….in any case there is no completing any painting ever……
A funny quote by Dumas
“What a funny thing painting is?
The abstract painter always insists on their connection
to the visible realities-while a so called realistic painter
insisits that what they really care about is the abstract
qualities of life….”
Confusing ..indeed.
